The clove is also called nageli because it resembles a small brown nail. Cloves are dried flower buds that are harvested from the tree of the same name. The clove trees once only grew in Southeast Asia. The cloves are native to the Moluccas, part of the Indonesian archipelago, also known as the Spice Islands. In the meantime, however, the plants can also be found in Central Europe.
Cloves have a very strong aroma, which is why they should only be used specifically with certain dishes. They are put into the pot as a whole. Cloves are actually known as a remedy. The spice is said to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Especially if you have a toothache, it is not illogical to use a clove to relieve the pain.
The taste of the clove is described as intense, spicy and also slightly hot. In the kitchen, the spice should then be used more specifically. For many, the taste is too intense. The cloves not only go well with the red cabbage, they are also good for spicing up the roast pork. Both get such an intense taste. The cloves can also be found in Indian cuisine. Here they are mainly used for chicken dishes with a mango chutney. Cloves should always be in the house, especially at Christmas time. They cannot be missing in gingerbread under any circumstances. Cloves are also an important ingredient in mulled wine.
If you haven't used the cloves before, it's worth giving them a try. They are very easy to use because they can be cooked whole. After that, however, they should be removed again, as they have a strong taste of their own, which is often perceived as unpleasant.
